Overview

The Kostic laboratory, based at the Joslin Diabetes Center and the Harvard Medical School Department of Microbiology and Immunobiology, works at the cutting-edge of the microbiome, immunology, and diabetes fields. Our work is driven by the goal of one day using the human microbiome to prevent and even reverse type 1 diabetes.

 

We seek a highly motivated Research Assistant with proven experimental expertise to play a central role in our group.

 

Responsibilities

  • Performs/participates in maintaining transgenic and mutant lines. Evaluates needs in consultation with the Pricipal Investigator, other researchers or outside scientists; sets up and follows matings; weans offspring; genotypes transgenic mice using recombinant DNA techniques or by western blotting and decides on and implements further crosses or colony adaptations. 
  • Performs/participates in phenotypic analyses of mouse models of diabetes and obesity, following the course of spontaneous or induced disease and designing and executing protocols to test potential therapeutic compounds. 
  • Evaluates diabetes in mice by testing blood glucose and urine glucose, performing glucose and insulin tolerance tests, and evaluates obesity by both physiological methods and tissue isolation, sampling tissues for histology, and participating in imaging experiments. 
  • Teaches lab fellows and students the procedures linked to experimentation in mouse models of diabetes and obesity.
  • Performs basic histological techniques when required. Prepares tissue or blood samples, fractionates serum components or cells for disease transfer experiments and administers to animals. 
  • Liaises and coordinates with internal and external animal technicians assisting in the breeding operation, and works with mice at off-site locations, like Massachusetts General Hospital. 
  • Records data from experiments on paper and helps establish and maintain and electronic database for mice. 
  • Coordinates with research students and/or fellows to ensure the flow of experimental protocols.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field
  • Minimum 1 year of experience post bachelor experience in small animal experimentation
  • Experience in recombinant DNA techniques (including PCR, cloning, DNA, RNA, protein prep, western blot).
  • Experience in microbiology is a plus 
  • Extremely detail-oriented
  • Possesses exceptional organizational skills
  • Self-motivation and independence in order to independently implement research projects
  • Ability to work well with others to integrate within multi-investigator projects
  • Manual dexterity to be able to hand mice
  • Willingness to work with mice and handle mouse cages
