The Coder (Revenue Cycle department) is responsible for daily submission of Joslin's Beetham Eye Institute (BEI) patient charges.


  • Review and final submit daily patient charges and surgical charges to ensure proper use of CPT, modifiers and diagnosis codes in compliance with provider documentation, current coding guidelines, and insurance carrier payment guidelines. Ensure that appropriate insurance plan (medical vs. vision) is billed for each encounter. 
  • Monitor weekly and monthly "missing charge" list to ensure timely submission of outstanding charges for both physician and MEEI facility.
  • Acts as the principal liaison to MEEI Revenue Cycle for timely transfer of electronic charge files.   
  • Coordinates with outside vendor to organize internal coding audits.    
  • Work closely with physicians to ensure E&M billing and documentation is correct. 
  • Work with Manager to review coding for new services and/or procedures prior to institution of such to ensure the ability to bill and collect.
  • Reviews 3rd party rejected services or patient disputed charges at request of the patient accounts department staff to determine whether the issue lies in coding, an improper rejection and whether an appeal is possible. 
  • Initiate insurance benefits investigation and co-pay assistance applications on intravitreal injection patients. Review completed investigations bringing any payment issues to the provider and patient’s immediate attention. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 


  • High School or GED
  • 1-3 years ICD-9/10, CPT and HCPCS coding experience, Ophthalmology preferred
  • Basic A/R understanding to be able to work with rejections/denials
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Current

  • Requires a working knowledge of medical terminology. Anatomy is mandatory. Excellent coding skills and experience in coding surgical cases, preferable Ophthalmology and evaluation and management coding
  • Excellent working knowledge of ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS.
  • Must have good time management and communication skills
  • Proven background as to how coding functions interrelates to billing and reimbursement for a professional practice plan
  • Level of knowledge of medical terminology to interact and communicate with providers, patients and third party payers
  • Level of familiarity with coding and reimbursement guidelines that enables incumbent to effectively communicate and collaborate with members of the revenue department, medical professionals and insurance providers on a daily and ongoing basis
  • Demonstrated high level proficiency in use of PC (windows) and software applications such as Access Excel, and Crystal
  • Experience with automated practice management systems including billing and receivables as well as scheduling programs preferred
