  • Overview

    The Philanthropy Communications Manager is responsible for developing and delivering an effective external communications program that enhances the abilities of Joslin’s Office of Philanthropy to build awareness, acquire and retain a community of loyal and generous donors, and to broaden the understanding of the work Joslin is undertaking.


    S/He will be responsible for developing the department’s communication plan, and executing that plan through a variety of vehicles including the website, social media assets, written collateral, and other external communication tools. This position will work very closely with and have a dotted line reporting relationship with Joslin’s Senior Director of Communications.    


    • Develop a comprehensive communications plan and program to build awareness among Joslin’s community of donors and potential donors, which broadens the knowledge of Joslin’s advanced diabetes research and clinical work. 
    • Manage the development of graphic and design materials through various external vendors for the website, print and email communications, social media, collateral materials, and/or solicitation pieces in coordination with Joslin Communications. 
    • Manage the production of Philanthropy communication print, online and video collateral. This includes, but is not limited to, authoring and editing collateral such as case-for-support pieces for use in solicitation, video scripts, Joslin’s “High Hopes Newsletter” and annual reports. Manage and coordinate contracted writers to develop special communications, such as publications to direct mail donors and brochures to solicit gifts from large groups of donors for the High Hopes Fund. 
    • Manage Philanthropy’s planning and execution of all cross-channel communication activities. 
    • Manage Philanthropy’s social media presence assets including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, which includes responsibility for strategic engagement, content development and management, including photos and video, all in coordination with Joslin Communications. 
    • Recommend, implement, and maintain which may include the development of online content through various platforms, such as Luminate Online (Convio), and spot editing Philanthropy-managed areas of Joslin’s main website in coordination with Joslin Communications. 
    • Manage development of scripts and talking points for Joslin officials participating in Philanthropy events in coordination with Joslin Communications. 
    • Measure, evaluate and report on the reach and success of Philanthropy’s online and print communications.



    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • A minimum of 5 to 7 years of experience in communication, marketing, philanthropy or another related field; or a degree in marketing and communications with 3 to 4 years of relevant experience.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills
    • Strong editorial and project management skills
    • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and/or Javascript
    • Familiarity with CMS tools
    • Ability to curate social media assets including video and photos
    • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud software preferred
