    The Gnotobiotic Facility Supervisor provides support for users of the gnotobiotic mouse facility.

    In this hands on role, you will maintain our specialized gnotobiotic mouse facility and supervise the work of 1 Animal Technician. 

    This role is essential for the successful operation of our gnotobiotic facility enabling researchers to perform experiments with gnotobiotic mice.

     

    This role is Monday-Friday 7:00 am-3:30 pm (Weekends and holidays may be required.)

    Responsibilities

    • Perform basic mouse husbandry both within gnotobiotic isolators, including monitoring of food, water, and bedding conditions, as well as sterilization and introduction of food, cages, bedding, water, and environmental enrichment as necessary and in our normal mouse colonies.
    • Must be comfortable handling mice, including restraining animals for collection of fecal pellets to determine germ-free status, as well as tagging animals for identification.
    • Must be comfortable performing mouse health checks and interacting with veterinarian as necessary.
    • Will monitor stocks of consumables and reorder in a timely manner.
    • Will maintain detailed records of tasks performed.
    • Weekends and holidays may be required.
    • Must be able to communicate effectively with researchers and lab staff.
    • Responsible for training and day-to-day supervision of gnotobiotic staff. (Currently 1 Technician)

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Life Science, RVT or LAT certification
    • Minimum of four years’ experience with mouse colony maintenance
    • Basic dosing skills including oral gavage and blood draw
    • Four years’ experience with mouse handling, breeding
    • Practical knowledge of mouse breeding protocols
    • Experience with basic microbial culture methods
    • AALAS certification at LAT or above
    • Sufficient computer knowledge for database maintenance
    • Evidence of precise communication skills and record keeping
    • Ability to train others
    • Should be a detail-oriented and self-directed person who has the desire to learn new skill sets and can handle increased responsibilities as the gnotobiotic facility expands
