  • Overview

    Reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO), the Manager, Foundation Relations and Stewardship will serve as a key member of the Philanthropy Team.  S/he will be responsible for planning and directing fund-raising strategies to secure annual and multi-year gifts from foundations and to ensure, through exemplary stewardship, long-term relationships with foundation donors. 

    The Manager will work closely with the CPO, senior administration and faculty to align proposals with institutional priorities and match them to the interests of foundations.  S/he will consult with the CPO to identify prospective foundation donors and implement solicitation and cultivation strategies, including proposal submission and report preparation. 


    The Manager, Foundation Relations and Stewardship will also oversee department’s donor relations/stewardship program to include annual reports to endowed fund donors, foundations and key current use donors, as well as overseeing the recognition plan, such as honor rolls. S/he will have the support of a philanthropy coordinator to assist with proposal preparation and reporting, as well as to implement various stewardship and recognition efforts.


    • Working closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, create and implement a foundation cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plan annually.
    • As part of the annual plan, work with the CPO and Joslin’s CFO/COO to match funders with identified needs of the institution.
    • In conjunction with the CPO, consult with the Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer and Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer as to the availability of RFP (request for proposal) opportunities that are appropriate to support the work of their respective faculty members.
    • Develop and submit proposals for foundations designed to attract new philanthropic support to the Center for approved priorities. Coordinate with the Office of Sponsored Research to ensure that effort reporting is accurate and foundation funding is allocated to the appropriate faculty members.
    • Develop foundation proposals on behalf of Joslin Diabetes Center that include program narratives, budgets, letters of support and collaboration, CVs of researchers, etc. according to specific requirements of individual foundations.
    • Create annual reporting/stewardship plans, in collaboration with the Manager, Philanthropy Communications and with the support of the Philanthropy Coordinator, for each foundation gift received and for the individual and corporate donors identified in the annual stewardship plan by the Chief Philanthropy Officer. Work with the Director, Philanthropy Operations to receive the financial reports to accompany the narratives on funds as necessary
    • Work along with the Manager, Philanthropy Communications to use existing written materials for narrative reports to donors or to write new narratives to demonstrate impact of gifts on Joslin’s mission
    • Actively participate as a member of the prospect management team, including maintaining records in the Raiser’s Edge database on the status of proposals. Be prepared to report on the progress of proposals in the pipeline with the CPO and senior administration
    • Continuously pursue educational opportunities to learn best practices in the area of grant writing, research, moves management, stewardship and recognition.


    • Bachelor’s degree
    • A minimum of 5-7 years of fundraising experience, with experience in foundation /corporate foundation giving and/or writing for philanthropy.
    • Proven successful supervisory skills and experience
    • Demonstrated ability to creatively build and sustain innovative programs in collaboration with physicians and researchers
    • Demonstrated success in soliciting $100,000+ in foundation/corporate foundation gifts
    • Superior written and verbal communication skills
    • An entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to make an impact in a fast-paced, team oriented environment
    • Interest and motivation to proactively build and sustain relationships with top foundations
    • Professional judgement and understanding of the need to coordinate and align the interests of foundations, faculty and senior leadership so that funding is secured for approved priorities that impact Joslin’s mission.
