Overview

The Vitreoretinal Surgeon will provide strong vitreoretinal surgical expertise and expert diabetic eye care for Beetham Eye Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center patients. 

In addition, this physician will participate in the operations of the Eye Research Clinical Trials program with a goal of maintaining and improving both recruitment and quality participation in clinical research.

 

Time will be allocated as follows: Clinic 100%

Responsibilities

  • Operates on patients with surgical retinal disease, including but not limited to retinal detachments, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, vitreous hemorrhage, endophthalmitis, etc.
  • Performs procedures, including intravitreal injections and lasers on patients for indications including but not limited to diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, etc.
  • Participates in Longwood Medical Area vitreoretinal call and provides emergency care as needed for urgent vitreoretinal cases
  • Treats patients with diabetic eye disease
    • Examines patients' eyes to ensure eye health and recommend appropriate treatment and follow-up
    • Prescribes glasses to correct vision
    • Provides emergency care and triages ophthalmic care as needed
  • Interacts in a collegial way with medical staff and colleagues
  • Educates medical retina fellows about evidence-based management of retinal disease, including supervising seeing patient in clinic and procedures such as intravitreal injections and lasers
  • Participates in referral development
  • Works in a collegial fashion with other diabetes health professionals
  • Participates in the operations of the BEI clinical research program
  • Participates in clinical research & clinical trials through study participant recruitment
  • Interacts with research staff, fellows
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Degree in medicine from an accredited school
  • Residency in Ophthalmology
  • Minimum 3 years of general ophthalmology experience (including residency)
  • Minimum 1 year of vitreoretinal surgery experience (including fellowship)
  • Certified license to practice in Massachusetts
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within Ophthalmology
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, ability to interact with peers and staff, fiscal and operational aspects of administrative responsibilities such as ensuring accountability in clinical and scholarly activities, staff development and budget management.
  • Effective communication skills are needed to share information and influence other investigators and internal/external colleagues as well as to mentor and develop medical staff, fellows and students.
  • Articulate both verbally and in writing with regard to evidence-based clinical diabetes eye care.
