The Adult Diabetes Section of the Joslin Diabetes Center is seeking to recruit a nurse practitioner to join its large group of providers, participating in clinical care, with some opportunity for research, and teaching if desired.  The Joslin Diabetes Center, a world-renowned diabetes institution affiliated with Harvard Medical School and member of the Beth Israel Lahey Health network, offers cutting-edge diabetes care to a diverse population across the Greater Boston area, as well as other national and international visitors.

 

As part of our collegial group of clinicians, you will join 18 MDs and 11 NPs supported by exceptional CDCES, RDs, exercise physiologists, and behavioral health specialists to deliver person-centered, culturally-sensitive, comprehensive diabetes care. Among others, programs focused on underserved populations such as the Asian American Diabetes Initiative and the LatinX Initiative are at the core of our mission.

 

Specific interest and expertise in subspecialty diabetes care is particularly welcome, including:

  • Management of persons with diabetes in pregnancy;
  • Weight management in type 2 diabetes;
  • Care of young adults with type 1 diabetes, with a focus on diabetes technology;
  • Care for the underserved and for diverse populations

 

Although primarily in the outpatient setting, the ideal candidate may also contribute to the activities of the inpatient diabetes consult service in coordination with a team of attending physicians, endocrine fellows, and diabetes educators.

Responsibilities

  • Using the nursing process and employing advanced skills and theory in health assessment, physical examination, interpretation of laboratory and other diagnostic tools, develops and implement a plan of care for patients with episodic and chronic healthcare needs, according to professional and organizational standards for quality and productivity.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking in the diagnostic process.
  • Establishes priorities to meet health and medical needs.
  • Prescribes medications within written guidelines for practice.
  • Documents data in the medical record in a clear, concise manner.
  • Monitors the individual’s response to therapy and revises the plan as indicated, with particular attention to education, counseling, and encouragement of self-care.
  • Provides/seeks consultation to/from the consulting physician and other members of the healthcare team as indicated by patient need. Provides written communication about diagnostic/screening procedures to the patient and other team members as appropriate.
  • Identifies a process with consulting/supervising physician to insure prescriptive practice is reviewed according to regulatory requirements.
  • Provides care in a manner that also incorporates the principles of patient satisfaction and cost effective care.
  • As a member of the medical team, will share the responsibilities on a proportionate basis with back-up physician support as needed. Provide ambulatory services and may contribute to the activities of the inpatient consult services; provide weekend (phone) call.

 

Qualifications

  • MSN and current certification to practice as a nurse practitioner from an accredited/recognized certifying body
  • Minimum of one year’s experience working as a nurse practitioner
  • Experience in diabetes care preferred
  • Current license, or eligibility, to practice as a nurse practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by the Board of Registration in Nursing
  • Valid DEA and MCS numbers, or eligibility, for prescription writing practices
  • Has obtained or is eligible to obtain provider numbers from insurance carriers that currently contract nurse practitioners (Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross/Blue Shield etc.)
