The primary purpose of this job is to provide strong specialized medical retina expertise and expert diabetic eye care for Beetham Eye Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center patients.  Time will be allocated based on clinic, research, and/or other responsibilities.

• Provides specialized medical retina care, including but not limited to retinal detachments, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, vitreous hemorrhage, endophthalmitis
• Performs procedures, including intravitreal injections and lasers on patients for indications including but not limited to diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion
• Participates in Longwood Medical Area vitreoretinal emergency on-call coverage and provides emergency care as needed for urgent vitreoretinal cases
• Treats patients with diabetic eye disease
  • Examines patients' eyes to ensure eye health and recommend appropriate treatment and follow-up
  • Prescribes glasses to correct vision
  • Provides emergency care and triages ophthalmic care as needed
• Interacts in a collegial way with medical staff and colleagues across departments
• Educates medical retina fellows about evidence-based management of retinal disease, including supervising seeing patient and procedures such as intravitreal injections and lasers
• Participates in referral development
• Participates in the operations of the BEI clinical research program
• Participates in clinical research & clinical trials through study participant recruitment
• Other duties as assigned

• Degree in Medicine from an accredited school
• Residency in Ophthalmology
• Fellowship in Medical Retina
• Minimum 5 years of general ophthalmology experience (including residency)
• Minimum 3 years of medical retina experience (including fellowship)
• Certified full medical license to practice in Massachusetts
• Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within Ophthalmology
• Extensive knowledge and comprehensive expertise in state-of-the-art medical retina diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions
• Demonstrated leadership skills, ability to interact with peers and staff, fiscal and operational aspects of administrative responsibilities such as ensuring accountability in clinical and scholarly activities, staff development and budget management.
• Effective communication skills are needed to share information and influence other investigators and internal/external colleagues as well as to mentor and develop medical staff, fellows and students.
• Demonstrated track record in translational research, including successful NIH-funded or equivalent national grants
• Demonstrated proficiency in translational research methodologies, grant writing, and publication of translational research in high-impact peer-reviewed journals
• Articulate both verbally and in writing with regard to evidence-based clinical diabetes eye care.
