Overview

Joslin Diabetes Center is seeking a full-time BC/BE nephrologist of any experience level to join our clinical practice located in Boston, MA. We are seeking an individual committed to the delivery of outstanding nephrology clinical care with a focus on kidney disease in patients living with diabetes as well as interested in contributing to the education and mentorship of trainees in a collaborative academic environment.

 

The Joslin Kidney and Hypertensive section provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient subspecialty services, including inpatient evaluation of acute kidney injury, critical care consultation, continuous renal replacement therapy, acute and chronic hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, nephrolithiasis, hypertension and outpatient management of CKD and kidney transplant recipients. The individual should work in a collegial fashion with adult diabetes physicians and nurse practitioners and with diabetes educators, including nurses, dietitians, and exercise physiologists; Perform academic and scholarly activities; Function as a member of the medical staff of the hospital(s) where he/she practices; Interact with the Clinic and Center Administrators in a positive and constructive fashion; Work collaboratively with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Nephrology Division with which the Joslin Diabetes Center has a joint clinical venture.

 

Qualifications:        

BC/BE nephrologist able to be certified and obtain medical licensure in Massachusetts.

 

Time will be allocated between clinic, research, inpatient service, PD and HD dialysis coverage and/or other responsibilities based on need, funding and applicant interest.

Responsibilities

Treats patients with general kidney disorders.

  • Evaluates and diagnoses all types of kidney disorders

  • Chooses appropriate therapy.

  • Works in a collaborative manner with other Joslin Diabetes Center/Joslin Clinic healthcare providers to assure high quality management.

  • Provides ongoing management assistance.

 

Treat patients with diabetic kidney disease.

  • Evaluates and diagnoses kidney conditions and disorders in addition to diabetic kidney disease.

  • Chooses appropriate therapy.

  • Recognizes complications of kidney disorders.

  • Chooses treatment to avoid and minimize complications.

  • Provides ongoing management assistance.

 

Treats general medical problems, within the context of a referral practice.

  • Evaluates general health status.

  • Diagnoses diseases besides diabetes.

  • Provides general medical therapy.

  • Refers patients when additional expertise is needed.

  • Works in collaboration with primary care physicians.

 

Works in a collegial fashion with other Joslin Clinic health care professionals.

  • Ensures that patients are seen and evaluated by diabetes health care professionals when appropriate.

  • Effects management plan in a cooperative manner and shares responsibility with allied health professionals including adult diabetes, mental health, pediatrics, ophthalmology, certified diabetes educator, nutritionists, exercise physiologists and nurse practitioners.

 

Participates in Teaching Activities

  • Participates in teaching of fellows, residents and medical students in both in-patient and out-patient settings.

  • Participates in teaching CME and other educational activities sponsored by the Kidney & Hypertension Section or Joslin Diabetes Center.

 

Actively Performs Academic Research

  • Participates or leads Basic or Clinical Research activity.

  • Participates in academic teaching pursuits or mentorship.

  • Seeks funding for research activity as needed.

  • Scholarly activities in clinical or translational research are encouraged.

                       

Interacts with the medical staff.

  • Fulfills obligations specified by hospital and Center Bylaws.

  • Participates on committees as needed.

  • Attends and participates actively in conferences.

  • Performs in a collegial fashion with other Center/Clinic and hospital or community physicians.

 

Interacts with the physicians in training (House staff).

  • Satisfies departmental teaching obligations.

  • Participates in conferences with House staff.

  • Discusses patients and cases of interest with the House staff.

  • Communicates about inpatient management.

 

Interacts with the Administrative Staff.

  • Works effectively with the Section Chief and Chief Medical Officer.

  • Works constructively with the Center Administrators and other Administrative Personnel.

 

Participates in referral development activities.

  • Presents lectures and promotes the program to physicians, hospital staff, and potential referral sources.

  • Participates in Joslin community activities (e.g. lectures, health fairs, radio programs).

Qualifications

  • M.D. degree from an accredited school
  • Residency in internal medicine

  • Fellowship in nephrology

  • Certification and licensure in Massachusetts

  • Board certified in internal medicine

  • Board certified in nephrology (or eligible for Board certification with certification expected)
