The Joslin Diabetes Center was established with the private practice of Dr. Eliot P. Joslin in 1898 and the Beetham Eye Institute is world renowned for the groundbreaking work of Dr. William P. Beetham, the pioneering work with laser photocoagulation for diabetic retinopathy by Drs. Lloyd M. Aiello and Dr. Beetham, and the landmark work of Dr. Lloyd Paul Aiello, our current Director, in establishing the role of vascular endothelial growth factor in diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema.  The BEI continues to be at the forefront of research into diabetic retinopathy and the eye care of patients with diabetes.     A Staff Optometrist in the Beetham Eye Institute of the Joslin Diabetes Center will provide general and specialized eye care, within the full scope of Optometric practice, to clinical patients and participants of clinical research trials.     The Staff Optometrist will function in a dual role as a collaborative care provider and primary healthcare provider.  They will examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures making referral for treatment of significant ocular conditions, other complications of diabetes and for diabetes and other systemic management as warranted.  Special emphasis is placed on excellence in the management of Diabetic Eye Disease with regard to current standards of care recognized internally by the Joslin Clinic as well as by external agencies.   The individual should work in a collegial fashion with Staff Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Clinic physicians, Certified Diabetes Educators, Nurses, and other health care providers in the co-management of care that affects the eye health and vision of their patients.    The Optometrist will prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, low vision aids and medicines to treat eye diseases as necessary. Actively assign hospital coverage, weekend call, night call, holiday call, and MOD call - assigning coverage equitably and following the allocation guidelines. The Provider Scheduling Coordinator will also facilitate and coordinate the in-patient hospital program to ensure quality care, timely follow-up of discharged patients and meaningful quality metrics. The Research Assistant will assist with experiments in a basic research lab with a focus on blood diseases and autoimmunity. Duties in this new lab will include performing experiments independently and as part of a team, as well as basic lab maintenance and ordering supplies, and genotyping and maintaining a mouse colony. Additionally, this person will also be responsible for preparing electronic datasets, maintaining specimen inventory, purchasing lab services and goods, laboratory organization, aliquoting samples, and reviewing medical records of selected patients participating in the Joslin Kidney Study. The Research Financial Analyst II (Fiscal Services dept.) provides financial and administrative support in Post-Award management of sponsored awards, grants and contracts within the Research Finance Office (RFO).
