The Ophthalmic Technician assists the ophthalmologists and optometrists in preparing patients for their appointments by taking medical/ocular histories, performing standard entrance tests, visual acuity and refraction as well as slit lamp examination of the anterior segment on patients. Will also provide support to Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Center. The Joslin Diabetes Center was established with the private practice of Dr. Eliot P. Joslin in 1898 and the Beetham Eye Institute is world renowned for the groundbreaking work of Dr. William P. Beetham, the pioneering work with laser photocoagulation for diabetic retinopathy by Drs. Lloyd M. Aiello and Dr. Beetham, and the landmark work of Dr. Lloyd Paul Aiello, our current Director, in establishing the role of vascular endothelial growth factor in diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema.  The BEI continues to be at the forefront of research into diabetic retinopathy and the eye care of patients with diabetes.     A Staff Optometrist in the Beetham Eye Institute of the Joslin Diabetes Center will provide general and specialized eye care, within the full scope of Optometric practice, to clinical patients and participants of clinical research trials.     The Staff Optometrist will function in a dual role as a collaborative care provider and primary healthcare provider.  They will examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures making referral for treatment of significant ocular conditions, other complications of diabetes and for diabetes and other systemic management as warranted.  Special emphasis is placed on excellence in the management of Diabetic Eye Disease with regard to current standards of care recognized internally by the Joslin Clinic as well as by external agencies.   The individual should work in a collegial fashion with Staff Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Clinic physicians, Certified Diabetes Educators, Nurses, and other health care providers in the co-management of care that affects the eye health and vision of their patients.    The Optometrist will prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, low vision aids and medicines to treat eye diseases as necessary. The Practice Manager of the Adult Diabetes Clinic provides day to day managerial support, coordination of patient care and oversight of clinical and non-clinical support staff alongside the Executive Director and Section Chief to ensure optimal clinic operations inclusive of high quality, competent, efficient services and exceptional patient satisfaction and customer service standards. The Provider Scheduling Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating and managing the master provider schedules for the clinics.  This role will work collaboratively with specialty clinics within Adult Diabetes (AD), Beetham Eye Institute (BEI), and Pediatrics to ensure adequate coverage is provided. Actively assign hospital coverage, weekend call, night call, holiday call, and MOD call - assigning coverage equitably and following the allocation guidelines. The Provider Scheduling Coordinator will also facilitate and coordinate the in-patient hospital program to ensure quality care, timely follow-up of discharged patients and meaningful quality metrics.
